What is LEED?
LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is an international eco-friendly building certification system developed by the US Green Building Council (USGBC). First introduced in 1998, LEED encourages the design, construction and operation of buildings in accordance with sustainability criteria. The version used since 2009 has been developed to comply with current standards and published as LEED v4.
Green Building and Goals
Today, issues such as global warming, diminishing water resources and environmental sustainability are of great importance. Studies reveal that buildings account for approximately 40% of energy consumption and 30% of water consumption worldwide. Moreover, considering that people spend approximately 90% of their lives indoors, the importance of environmentally friendly building design becomes even more evident.
Green buildings are designed to reduce energy and water consumption, optimize waste management, improve indoor air quality and prioritize the comfort of users. Considering factors such as natural lighting, temperature and humidity control, it is aimed to create an ideal living and working environment in terms of both environmental and human health. Research shows that individuals who work or live in green buildings are healthier and their work performance is improved compared to those in other buildings.
Advantages of Green Buildings
Green buildings offer many important advantages compared to conventional buildings:
Energy and Water Savings: Green buildings consume on average 30% less energy than conventional buildings. Water consumption can be reduced by up to 50% thanks to water-saving waterless urinals, efficient reservoirs, sink and shower faucets.
Indoor Quality: Comfort in living and working spaces is enhanced with better air quality, optimal temperature control and natural lighting.
Lower Operation and Maintenance Costs: Operating and maintenance costs are minimized through more efficient resource utilization and smart building technologies.
Health and Productivity: While the health expenditures of individuals living and working in green buildings are reduced, being in a healthier environment increases work efficiency.
Green building practices have become an important standard in the modern building sector by contributing to human health and economic efficiency as well as environmental sustainability.
